Ubunutu 9.04 Screen resolution issues

Postby glavanway » Wed Jun 17, 2009 8:42 am

I want to add higher resolutions to the desktop resolution choices.

I have a Dell Latitude X300, just installed Ubuntu 9.04. When I try to change the screen resolution there are only a limited number of options. The biggest is 1024x800 (I think that's it, I don't have it in front of me). I have tried to 'add' resolutions to it with no success. I have Compiz-Fusion installed and working. I have looked into the xorg.conf and it has changed from what I am used to. In the past I would copy one of the other resolution lines and modify it to what I wanted. Those lines are no longer in xorg.conf. I read the xrandr man page and an on-line 'how to' but it didn't work and was more a list of commands not an explanation. Can any one help me out with this?

Try using the command line and then sudo nvidia-settings.

Once you have admin privileges, it should let you make permanent changes.

This link might also have some info/tips.

It has an Intel 855GM video card will nvidia-settings work on it?

Thanks for responding!

Oops, maybe not.

Ubuntu forums are your friend in this case. I rarely use anything other than nvidia with a Linux box.

Looks like there may be new(er) drivers you can download fromj:

Give it a shot - let us know.

Sorry for the delay. I scored a sweet job admin'ing Linux servers fro a (inter?)National finance company. Which is awsome (first Linux only job), but sucks because of the finance aspect security won't let me bring my Laptop anywhere near the building. However, I will try the suggestions and let you know what happens.

If you didn't notice, Monday night was when they pushed out the new Intel drivers. If you don't know about them, these are supposed to be the drivers from Intel where the old drivers were reverse engineered. They are supposed to be much better drivers and a lot less code. There has been a lot of talk about these over in the Ubuntu forums.

The big thing with Intels code is that the drivers are supposed to be so much cleaner and don't have to be blacklisted by Ubuntu. You should see better results at higher resolutions.

So far I have not had a problem with the new drivers. Then again, I wasn't one who was having problems with the old drivers....

I am curious to see how the new update works for you.
Product Keys? Imaginary Property rights? Digital Restriction Management?
These things confuse me and I have no need for them for I run Debian Linux!

I believe the issue might be a physical limitation of the laptop. Unfortunately I think I recall it being higher under XP.
