Processor Swap

Hey guys,
So i have this box I am trying to build for someone who is getting into Linux game programing. It is just a P4 1.8 Ghz / 256 cache / 400Mhz bus. Well I realized that I had some P4's laying around so I thought "why not upgrade?"

Well the MB is this ASUS P4B533-VM and man is it picky....

Anyway, I have a P4 2.4 / 1M / 533 processor that I know works...but it doesn't boot on this MB...just get the fan spin and that is it.

So I tried the next one. A P4 2.6 / 512 / 800 processor that I know works....it boots up, but the MB will only use it as a 1.3 Ghz. My Google'ing shows the reason is because the board can't handle the bus speed, so it underclocks it. However, there are people running faster processors on the MB (saw a 2.8Ghz ) so I know it is just the bus speed and not the clock speed.

Anyway, I figured with these 3 processors I am sure I can trade someone one of them (or multiple/all) for some kind of upgrade.

So, if you have a P4 processor that is greater then 1.8Ghz with a bus speed of 400 and you want one of the ones I have posted above...post and bring it to the meeting!

Thanks!

I'm sure that you did a BIOS upgrade, so I won't even mention that.

No, it looks like the MB just doesn't support the faster bus speeds. I did do a BIOS update to the latest version, but that didn't help.

Dave, I really appreciate the CPU's and the Memory. Hopefully we can find something that works.

Oh speaking of Memory...I had a few 256MB sticks of PC100 and PC133 come my way. I remember a few months ago someone at the meeting was asking for some. I will bring them on Saturday, but I don't remember who needed them....

About the old 128M/256M PC100 and pc133, they tend to make older computers like P2's and P3's useful for installing Linux on them. One of those with 256 or 512M of ram makes them darn useful. Especially for beginners.
